Email or Print?
Ah, le grand debate. Most of our clients produce newsletters in both email and print versions, as they know that employees like choice. Email newsletters are popular and cost effective, but our research shows that print newsletters are still the most memorable way to get your message across.
Internal newsletters
Regular newsletters are a really great way to keep employees up to speed over a period of time. We recommend short, visual and highly ‘scannable’ newsletters sent on a regular basis to make it super-easy for your people to read and absorb all your messages.
Like many internal communication tools, companies who do internal newsletters well do them really well. Those who do them badly, can do more harm than good. Here’s our quick guide to creating great newsletters that your people will really value.
Good newsletters are:
- employee-centric: What does the information mean for them? What are they expected to do or understand? What do people like them think of the issues raised? What information about the company and the market will help people do their jobs better?
- honest, not ‘glossy’
- well-designed and easy-on-the-eye magazine style layout and the same quality of artwork as customer-facing collateral
- engaging and relevant, using regular features like ‘5 ways to...’, ‘a week in the life of...’ and ’10 _____ to watch...’
What we can help you with
- thinking through a newsletter strategy: what to send to who and how
- designing a fantastic template
- writing engaging, relevant and honest copy for each issue
- laying out and producing each issue - email, print or both
- keeping your newsletter fresh - and ensuring people really do read and value every copy
How one of our clients puts us to work:
We write a functional newsletter 8 times a year for a pharmaceutical company. Every 6 weeks, we get together with them for a lively breakfast meeting and plan the next newsletter. We interview employees all over the world to create the content and produce a nice shiny newsletter in both print and hard copy which is sent round the business and gets great feedback. Easy!
